Mustang lies north of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges, on the edge of the Tibetan plateau. Red cliffs, cave dwellings and whitewashed monasteries line the Kali Gandaki valley. Most trips start with a flight from Pokhara to Jomsom.
Upper Mustang sits in the rain shadow, so it is one of the few treks you can do in the monsoon (Jun–Aug) as well as spring and autumn. The trail stays between 2,800 m and 4,000 m; Lo Manthang is at 3,840 m.
It suits trekkers who want culture as much as mountains, and who are happy on dusty, windy trails. Upper Mustang is a restricted area, so a special permit and a licensed guide are required. Treks here: Upper Mustang Trek.
